Set Pressure

The calibrated pressure at which a pressure relief or safety valve is designed to begin opening.

Definition

Set Pressure is the predetermined pressure at which a pressure relief valve or pressure safety valve is designed to begin opening under specified operating conditions to prevent equipment from exceeding its allowable pressure limits. The set pressure is established during valve certification and testing in accordance with applicable engineering codes and standards.

Why It Matters

Set Pressure defines the calibrated opening pressure of pressure-relieving devices used to protect pressure systems.

In Practice

Set Pressure is established during valve calibration and certification and is a critical design parameter for pressure protection systems governed by standards such as ASME and API.

Common Misuse

Set Pressure defines the opening pressure of a pressure-relieving device, whereas a Setpoint is the target operating value used by process control or protective systems.
