Risk Assessment

A systematic process for identifying hazards, evaluating risk and determining appropriate risk reduction measures.

Definition

Risk Assessment is the structured process of identifying hazards, evaluating the likelihood and consequences of adverse events, estimating the resulting level of risk and determining whether additional controls or mitigation measures are required. Risk assessments support informed decision-making throughout the design, operation, maintenance and modification of assets and systems.

Why It Matters

Risk Assessments provide a structured basis for evaluating hazards and implementing appropriate risk reduction measures.

In Practice

Risk Assessment methodologies vary according to application and may include qualitative, semi-quantitative or quantitative approaches using tools such as risk matrices, HAZOP, FMEA, LOPA and quantitative risk assessment techniques.

Common Misuse

Risk Assessment evaluates and prioritizes identified risks, whereas Risk-Based Inspection applies risk assessment principles specifically to inspection planning and asset integrity management.
