RAM — Reliability Availability Maintainability

An engineering discipline used to evaluate and optimize the reliability, availability and maintainability of assets and systems.

Definition

Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM) is an engineering discipline that evaluates the ability of assets or systems to perform their required functions, remain operational and be efficiently restored to service following failures. RAM analyses support engineering design, maintenance planning, lifecycle optimization and operational performance by balancing reliability, availability and maintainability objectives.

In Practice
