PSI — Process Safety Information

The documented technical information required to safely design, operate and maintain a process involving hazardous materials.

Definition

Process Safety Information (PSI) comprises the documented technical information describing hazardous materials, process technology, equipment design and safe operating limits required to support the safe design, operation, maintenance and modification of process facilities. PSI forms a fundamental element of Process Safety Management and supports engineering, operations and Management of Change activities.

Why It Matters

Process Safety Information provides the technical foundation required for effective process safety management throughout the asset lifecycle.

In Practice

Process Safety Information typically includes information relating to process chemistry, hazardous materials, equipment design, operating limits, relief systems, engineering drawings and associated technical documentation.

Common Misuse

Process Safety Information provides the technical basis for managing process safety, whereas Process Safety Management establishes the organizational framework for applying that information.
