A formal authorization process used to control hazardous work activities and ensure appropriate safety precautions are in place.
A Permit to Work (PTW) is a formal system used to authorize, control and document hazardous work activities by ensuring that risks have been assessed, appropriate precautions implemented and necessary approvals obtained before work begins. PTW systems are fundamental to the safe execution of maintenance, construction and operational activities.
Permit to Work systems provide formal control over hazardous work activities to protect personnel, assets and the environment.
Permit to Work systems commonly govern activities such as hot work, confined space entry, excavation, electrical isolation, line breaking and work at height, often in conjunction with Lockout/Tagout and other safety controls.
A Permit to Work authorizes and controls hazardous work activities, whereas Lockout/Tagout specifically isolates hazardous energy sources before work is performed.
