Job Safety Analysis (JSA) is a systematic process that breaks a work activity into individual steps, identifies the hazards associated with each step and establishes the controls necessary to eliminate or reduce the associated risks. JSAs are completed before work begins and are widely used to communicate hazards, verify worker understanding and support safe execution of maintenance, construction and operational activities.
Job Safety Analysis helps ensure that work is planned and executed with appropriate hazard identification and risk controls.
JSAs are commonly completed jointly by supervisors and work crews immediately before commencing work and are frequently reviewed if work conditions change.
A Job Safety Analysis evaluates the hazards of a specific task, whereas a Process Hazard Analysis evaluates hazards associated with an entire process or facility.
