HAZOP — Hazard and Operability Study

A structured and systematic review used to identify process hazards and operability problems within industrial facilities.

Definition

A Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) is a formal multidisciplinary risk assessment methodology that systematically examines process designs using predefined guide words to identify potential hazards, operability issues and deviations from intended design or operating conditions. HAZOP studies evaluate possible causes, consequences, existing safeguards and recommended actions for each identified deviation.

Why It Matters

HAZOP is one of the most widely used process hazard analysis techniques for improving safety, reliability and operational performance throughout the lifecycle of industrial facilities.

In Practice

HAZOP studies are typically performed during project development, plant modifications and periodic safety reviews using multidisciplinary teams that include process, operations, maintenance, instrumentation and safety specialists.
