OPR — Operating Procedure

A documented set of instructions describing how to safely and consistently perform an operational task or process.

Definition

An Operating Procedure (OPR) is a controlled document that defines the steps, responsibilities, precautions and operating parameters required to safely and consistently perform a specific operational activity. Operating Procedures support standardized operations, regulatory compliance and the safe management of plant equipment and processes.

Why It Matters

Operating Procedures provide standardized instructions that promote safe, consistent and reliable plant operations.

In Practice

Operating Procedures are typically developed, approved and maintained under document control and are periodically reviewed to reflect operational changes, lessons learned and Management of Change activities.

Common Misuse

An Operating Procedure defines how a task is performed, whereas an Operating Envelope defines the range of conditions within which the task or process should operate safely.
