NOC — Normal Operating Conditions

The range of operating parameters within which equipment or processes are designed to function safely and reliably.

Definition

Normal Operating Conditions (NOC) are the expected operating parameters, process conditions and environmental factors under which equipment or systems are intended to function safely, reliably and efficiently during routine operation. These conditions establish the basis for equipment design, operating procedures, inspection planning and performance monitoring.

Why It Matters

Normal Operating Conditions define the expected operating envelope for safe and reliable routine operation.

In Practice

Operating outside Normal Operating Conditions may accelerate degradation, reduce equipment life or require additional engineering assessment to ensure continued safe operation.

Common Misuse

Normal Operating Conditions describe the expected operating envelope, whereas upset, abnormal or emergency conditions fall outside routine operating limits.
