LOD — Level of Development

A measure of the maturity, completeness and reliability of information contained within a digital engineering model.

Definition

Level of Development (LOD) defines the degree to which model elements contain sufficient information and accuracy to support engineering, construction or operational decisions. It measures the completeness, reliability and intended use of model information throughout the project lifecycle, independent of the graphical complexity of the model.

Why It Matters

Level of Development communicates the maturity and trustworthiness of engineering information contained within digital models.

In Practice

Industry guidance commonly defines multiple Levels of Development that represent increasing confidence in model accuracy and engineering completeness as a project progresses.

Common Misuse

Level of Development measures the maturity and reliability of engineering information, whereas Level of Detail measures only the graphical representation of model elements.
