LOD — Level of Detail

A measure of the geometric and graphical completeness of a digital model.

Definition

Level of Detail (LOD) describes the graphical and geometric complexity of objects within a digital engineering or Building Information Modeling (BIM) model. It defines how much visual detail is represented, from simplified conceptual geometry to fabrication-level models. Level of Detail relates to graphical representation rather than the accuracy or reliability of the underlying engineering information.

Why It Matters

Level of Detail provides a consistent framework for describing the graphical maturity of digital engineering models.

In Practice

Although often abbreviated as LOD, Level of Detail should not be confused with Level of Development, which measures the maturity and reliability of model information rather than graphical complexity.

Common Misuse

Level of Detail describes graphical representation, whereas Level of Development describes the completeness and reliability of engineering information contained within the model.
