Hydrotest — Hydrostatic Pressure Test

A pressure test that uses a liquid, typically water, to verify the structural integrity and leak-tightness of pressure-containing equipment.

Definition

A Hydrostatic Pressure Test (Hydrotest) is a controlled pressure test performed by filling equipment such as pressure vessels, piping systems or tanks with an incompressible liquid, usually water, and pressurizing it to a specified test pressure. The test verifies structural integrity, confirms leak-tightness and demonstrates that the equipment can safely withstand its design pressure before being placed into service or returned to operation.

Why It Matters

Hydrostatic Pressure Testing provides assurance that newly constructed, repaired or modified pressure systems can safely withstand operating conditions without leakage or structural failure.

In Practice

Hydrotests are commonly performed following fabrication, major repairs, alterations or maintenance activities and are typically conducted in accordance with applicable design codes and regulatory requirements.

Common Misuse

Hydrostatic testing uses an incompressible liquid to minimize stored energy during testing, making it inherently safer than pneumatic pressure testing for most applications.
