GAP

GAP — Gap Analysis

A structured assessment used to identify differences between the current state and a desired future state.

Definition

Gap Analysis is a systematic methodology for comparing existing processes, systems, performance or compliance against defined requirements, standards or desired objectives in order to identify deficiencies and improvement opportunities. Gap analyses are widely used during engineering projects, digital transformation initiatives, asset management programs and regulatory compliance assessments.

Why It Matters

Gap Analysis supports strategic planning and continuous improvement by identifying actions required to achieve defined business, engineering or operational objectives.

In Practice

A Gap Analysis typically documents the current state, desired future state, identified gaps, associated risks, recommended actions, priorities and implementation roadmap.

Common Misuse

Gap Analysis identifies differences between current and desired conditions but does not itself define the detailed implementation plan needed to close those gaps.
