Failure Mechanism

The physical, chemical or mechanical process that causes a component to fail.

Definition

A Failure Mechanism is the underlying physical, chemical or metallurgical process that leads to deterioration and ultimately results in equipment failure. Examples include fatigue, corrosion, creep, brittle fracture, erosion, wear and stress corrosion cracking. Understanding failure mechanisms enables engineers to identify why materials degrade under specific operating conditions and to develop appropriate inspection, monitoring and mitigation strategies.

Why It Matters

Failure Mechanisms provide the scientific basis for reliability engineering, materials selection, inspection planning and fitness-for-service assessments.

In Practice

A single Failure Mode may result from one or more Failure Mechanisms acting individually or in combination under specific operating conditions.

Common Misuse

Failure Mechanisms describe the physical processes that produce failure, whereas Failure Modes describe the observable manner in which the failure occurs.
