Understanding failure mechanisms enables engineers to identify why materials degrade under specific operating conditions and to develop appropriate inspection, monitoring and mitigation strategies.

A single Failure Mode may result from one or more Failure Mechanisms acting individually or in combination under specific operating conditions.
