TAG — Equipment Tag

A unique identifier used to distinguish, reference or manage a physical asset, engineering object, digital object or other identifiable entity throughout its lifecycle.

Definition

A Tag (TAG) is a unique identifier assigned to a physical asset, engineering object, digital object or other identifiable entity to enable consistent identification, reference and lifecycle information management. Tags may exist as physical labels attached to equipment, engineering identifiers applied to assets and systems, or digital identifiers associated with drawings, models, databases, control systems and software applications. Tags provide the common reference that links physical assets with engineering documentation, operational systems and digital information throughout the asset lifecycle.

Why It Matters

Tags provide the unique identifiers that connect physical assets, engineering information and digital systems throughout the asset lifecycle.

In Practice

Tags are assigned in accordance with organizational or project tagging specifications and may be represented as physical labels, engineering identifiers or digital references within engineering drawings, 3D models, maintenance systems, historians, SCADA systems and enterprise applications.

Common Misuse

A Tag is the engineering concept of uniquely identifying an object or asset, whereas a Tag Number is the specific alphanumeric value assigned to that Tag.
