CBM — Condition Based Maintenance

A maintenance strategy that performs maintenance based on measured equipment condition rather than fixed schedules.

Definition

Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) is a maintenance methodology that uses equipment condition data to determine when maintenance should be performed. Rather than relying solely on predetermined time intervals, CBM uses inspections, condition monitoring and diagnostic techniques to identify deterioration and schedule maintenance only when indicators show that intervention is required.

Why It Matters

CBM reduces unnecessary maintenance, minimizes equipment downtime, extends asset life and improves maintenance efficiency by aligning maintenance activities with actual equipment condition.

In Practice

CBM relies on accurate condition monitoring data and may incorporate technologies such as vibration analysis, infrared thermography, ultrasonic testing and online equipment monitoring to support maintenance decision-making.

Common Misuse

Condition-Based Maintenance is a maintenance strategy that uses condition information to determine maintenance timing. It differs from Predictive Maintenance, which generally applies analytical techniques to forecast future failures using condition data.
