WBS — Work Breakdown Structure

A hierarchical framework used to organize and manage the scope of work for a project or major activity.

Definition

A Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is a hierarchical decomposition of a project or major activity into progressively smaller and more manageable work packages. The WBS provides the organizational framework for planning, scheduling, estimating, assigning responsibilities and monitoring project execution throughout the project lifecycle.

Why It Matters

Work Breakdown Structures organize project scope into manageable work packages for planning and execution.

In Practice

Work Breakdown Structures provide the foundation for project planning, scheduling, cost management, progress reporting and resource allocation across engineering and construction projects.

Common Misuse

A Work Breakdown Structure organizes the overall project scope, whereas a Work Pack defines the activities required to complete a specific portion of that scope.
