Validation

The process of confirming that data, systems, products or processes satisfy their intended purpose and specified requirements.

Definition

Validation is the systematic process of demonstrating that data, systems, products, processes or engineering deliverables are suitable for their intended use and satisfy defined functional, operational or business requirements. Validation provides objective evidence that the completed outcome fulfills its intended purpose under actual or representative operating conditions.

Why It Matters

Validation confirms that data, systems or deliverables are fit for their intended purpose and operational use.

In Practice

Validation may include functional testing, operational verification, data quality assessments, user acceptance testing and engineering reviews depending on the nature of the item being validated.

Common Misuse

Validation confirms that an item satisfies its intended use, whereas Verification confirms that it has been developed or produced in accordance with specified requirements.
