SPIR — Spare Parts Interchangeability Record

A structured engineering record identifying approved spare parts and interchangeable replacement components for maintainable equipment.

Definition

A Spare Parts Interchangeability Record (SPIR) is a structured engineering document that identifies the recommended spare parts for equipment together with approved interchangeable or equivalent replacement components. SPIRs support maintenance planning, procurement, inventory optimization and lifecycle asset management by ensuring that appropriate replacement parts are available throughout the operational life of the asset.

Why It Matters

Spare Parts Interchangeability Records define recommended spare parts and approved interchangeable replacements for maintainable equipment.

In Practice

SPIRs are commonly developed during engineering and project delivery and provide the technical basis for spare parts procurement, inventory management and long-term maintenance support.

Common Misuse

A Spare Parts Interchangeability Record identifies approved replacement parts for specific equipment, whereas a Spare Parts Inventory Register records the spare parts currently held in inventory.
