SDS — Safety Data Sheet

A standardized document providing information on the hazards, safe handling, storage and emergency response requirements for hazardous substances.

Definition

A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is a standardized document that provides information relating to the hazards, safe handling, storage, transport, emergency response and disposal of chemical substances or mixtures. SDSs support the safe use of hazardous materials by providing workers and emergency responders with consistent health, safety and environmental information.

Why It Matters

Safety Data Sheets communicate essential health, safety and environmental information relating to hazardous substances.

In Practice

Safety Data Sheets are prepared in accordance with the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) and have replaced the older Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) terminology in most jurisdictions.

Common Misuse

A Safety Data Sheet communicates hazards and safe handling requirements for hazardous substances, whereas Process Safety Information encompasses the broader technical information required to safely design and operate hazardous processes.
