RFI — Request for Information

A formal document used to request clarification of technical, contractual or project information during project execution.

Definition

A Request for Information (RFI) is a formal document used to obtain clarification, additional information or technical decisions relating to engineering, construction, contractual or project requirements. RFIs provide a controlled mechanism for resolving uncertainties, documenting responses and maintaining traceability throughout project execution.

Why It Matters

Requests for Information provide a formal process for obtaining and documenting project-related technical clarifications and decisions.

In Practice

RFIs are widely used during engineering and construction projects to resolve design ambiguities, confirm technical requirements and document engineering decisions affecting project execution.

Common Misuse

A Request for Information seeks clarification of existing requirements, whereas an Engineering Change formally modifies those requirements or the associated design documentation.
