Definition

A Process Safety Event (PSE) is a reportable event involving the loss of process safety controls that results in, or has the potential to result in, significant consequences to personnel, the environment, assets or business operations. Process Safety Events are classified and monitored to support process safety performance measurement, regulatory reporting and continual improvement.

Why It Matters

Process Safety Events provide a standardized basis for measuring and improving process safety performance.

In Practice

Process Safety Events are commonly classified using recognized industry guidance, including API Recommended Practice 754, to support consistent reporting, benchmarking and performance improvement.

Common Misuse

A Process Safety Event is a reportable process safety performance event, whereas a Process Containment Event specifically involves the unintended release of hazardous process materials from containment.
