OEM — Original Equipment Manufacturer

The organization that designs, manufactures or supplies original equipment and its associated technical documentation and support.

Definition

An Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) is the organization responsible for designing, manufacturing or supplying equipment as the original producer. OEMs typically provide technical documentation, operating recommendations, spare parts, maintenance guidance and engineering support throughout the equipment lifecycle.

Why It Matters

Original Equipment Manufacturers provide the equipment, technical expertise and lifecycle support required for the safe and reliable operation of their products.

In Practice

OEMs commonly supply installation guidance, maintenance recommendations, replacement parts, software updates and engineering support to help maintain equipment performance and reliability throughout its service life.

Common Misuse

An Original Equipment Manufacturer designs and supplies the equipment, whereas owners and operators are responsible for its installation, operation and maintenance.
