OPC DA — OPC Data Access

The OPC Classic specification for real-time industrial data exchange between devices and software applications.

Definition

OPC Data Access (OPC DA) is the OPC Classic specification that standardizes real-time communication between industrial devices, control systems and software applications. It enables clients to read, write and subscribe to live process data through a common interface, providing vendor-independent access to automation systems.

Why It Matters

OPC Data Access standardizes the exchange of real-time industrial process data between automation systems and software applications.

In Practice

OPC DA is based on Microsoft COM/DCOM technology and remains widely implemented in existing industrial control systems, although new systems typically adopt OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA).

Common Misuse

OPC Data Access provides standardized access to live process data, whereas OPC Historical Data Access provides access to archived historical information.
