OPC A&E

OPC A&E — OPC Alarms and Events

The OPC Classic specification for communicating industrial alarms and event notifications.

Definition

OPC Alarms and Events (OPC A&E) is the OPC Classic specification that standardizes the communication of alarms, operator notifications and system events between industrial automation systems and client applications. It enables software to subscribe to, acknowledge and process alarms and event information using a common vendor-independent interface.

Why It Matters

OPC Alarms and Events standardizes the exchange of industrial alarm and event information between automation systems and software applications.

In Practice

OPC A&E supports event-driven communication rather than continuous data exchange and has largely been replaced by the event capabilities incorporated within OPC Unified Architecture.

Common Misuse

OPC Alarms and Events communicates alarm and event notifications, whereas OPC Data Access exchanges continuously changing real-time process values.
