The code governing the inspection, repair, alteration and testing of pressure-retaining equipment after it has been placed into service.
The National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) is a standard published by the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors that establishes requirements for the inspection, repair, alteration and pressure testing of boilers, pressure vessels and other pressure-retaining equipment after installation and throughout their operational life.
It provides standardized requirements for maintaining the safety and integrity of pressure-retaining equipment after it has been placed into service.
The NBIC complements the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code by governing in-service inspection and repair activities rather than the original design and construction of pressure equipment.
The NBIC governs the inspection and repair of equipment already in service, whereas the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code specifies requirements for design, fabrication and initial construction.
