Inspection Interval

The planned period of time or operating exposure between successive inspections of an asset or inspection location.

Definition

An Inspection Interval defines the maximum allowable time, operating hours or service exposure between scheduled inspections of equipment or specific inspection locations. Intervals are established using engineering judgement, regulatory requirements, degradation rates, historical performance and risk-based methodologies to ensure equipment integrity is maintained throughout its service life.

Why It Matters

Inspection Intervals determine when inspections are performed to detect deterioration before equipment integrity is compromised.

In Practice

Inspection Intervals may be revised based on inspection results, corrosion rates, changes in operating conditions or updated risk assessments.

Common Misuse

Inspection Intervals define when inspections occur, whereas Inspection Plans define what inspections will be performed and how they will be executed.
