EOH — Equivalent Operating Hours

A calculated measure that converts varying operating conditions into an equivalent number of operating hours under defined reference conditions.

Definition

Equivalent Operating Hours (EOH) is a cumulative operating metric that adjusts actual operating time to account for factors such as load, temperature, pressure, cycling, starts, stops or other conditions that influence equipment degradation. EOH provides a more representative measure of asset usage than calendar time or running hours alone.

Why It Matters

EOH enables maintenance and inspection activities to be scheduled according to actual equipment usage rather than elapsed time, improving maintenance effectiveness and lifecycle management.

In Practice

Equivalent Operating Hours are widely used for turbines, compressors, engines and other equipment where operating severity has a significant influence on component life.

Common Misuse

Equivalent Operating Hours represent normalized equipment usage rather than elapsed operating time and should not be confused with simple running hours.
