Equipment Criticality

A classification that ranks equipment according to the consequences of its failure.

Definition

Equipment Criticality is the evaluation and ranking of equipment based on the potential consequences of failure, considering factors such as safety, environmental impact, production loss, maintenance cost, regulatory compliance and operational risk. Criticality assessments are commonly used to prioritize maintenance, inspections, capital investment and reliability improvement activities.

Why It Matters

Equipment Criticality supports risk-based decision making by focusing resources on the assets that present the greatest operational or business risk.

In Practice

Criticality methodologies typically combine likelihood and consequence assessments and may incorporate qualitative, semi-quantitative or quantitative evaluation techniques depending on organizational requirements.
