CAL — Calibration

The process of comparing and adjusting a measuring instrument to ensure its accuracy against a known reference standard.

Definition

Calibration is the documented process of comparing the performance of a measuring instrument, sensor or test device against a traceable reference standard to verify and, where necessary, adjust its accuracy. Calibration establishes the relationship between the instrument's indicated value and the true value, ensuring measurements remain reliable and within specified tolerances.

Why It Matters

Calibration ensures measurement accuracy, supports regulatory compliance, improves product quality and provides confidence in inspection, testing and operational data.

In Practice

Calibration intervals are typically established based on manufacturer recommendations, regulatory requirements, historical performance and operational criticality. Calibration records form an important part of an asset's maintenance history.

Common Misuse

Calibration verifies or adjusts instrument accuracy against a reference standard and should not be confused with validation, which confirms that a system is fit for its intended purpose.
