100% Ultrasonic Testing

The requirement to perform ultrasonic testing on the entire specified length or volume of a weld or component.

Definition

100% Ultrasonic Testing is an inspection requirement specifying that ultrasonic testing (UT) is performed over the full extent of the designated welds, joints or components rather than on a representative sample. It is commonly specified where complete volumetric examination is required to verify weld quality, detect internal discontinuities and demonstrate compliance with applicable engineering codes and specifications.

Why It Matters

100% Ultrasonic Testing requires complete ultrasonic examination of specified welds or components to verify their internal integrity.

In Practice

Full ultrasonic examination may be specified as an alternative to radiographic testing where permitted by applicable engineering codes, project specifications or regulatory requirements.

Common Misuse

100% Ultrasonic Testing defines the required inspection coverage, whereas Ultrasonic Testing describes the inspection method itself.
