Definition

A Specification (SPEC) is a controlled engineering document that defines the technical, functional, material, performance, quality and acceptance requirements applicable to a product, system, service or engineering activity. Specifications establish the criteria against which design, procurement, fabrication, construction, testing and acceptance are evaluated.

Why It Matters

Specifications define the technical requirements and acceptance criteria governing engineering, procurement and project execution.

In Practice

Specifications may be developed by organizations, clients, standards bodies or projects and commonly reference applicable codes, standards, testing requirements and acceptance criteria.

Common Misuse

A Specification defines the technical requirements applicable to a product or activity, whereas a Scope of Work defines the work to be performed and the associated deliverables.
